Classwork and Homework

Hi there,
Today in class you were instructed now that you pretty much have identified at least three story elements, see yesterday's blog for planning sheet, in your reading notebook strategies #1-5, you are now to go through strategies #6-9 and put stickies on each of these reading strategies that are about the three story elements that seem to be strongest in #1-5. You are also to fill in the planning sheet when you are putting stickies on the strategies.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record your title, minutes and page #'s.

2. Finish your planning sheet for strategies #1-9.

3. By Thursday have reading notebook strategy #10 completed and also have stickies on it for the three story elements that you have chosen.

Have a great evening,
Mrs. Downs

Classwork and Homework

Hi students and parents/guardians,
Today in class we went over the Companion Book Expectations and Planning Sheet. Copy and paste the link below to view these papers:
https://docs.google.com/a/portlandschools.org/document/d/1zLWHDNtX9bsqqDQ3uJmpYo5FHMSx9QXiffFFnEun1kw/edit?usp=sharing

Then you went back to our chairs and began working on placing stickies on each of your reading strategies. You were to write on the stickie which story element you used and was it in the beginning, middle or end of the book. So, for example, you could write character- B. This would show that the particular part of the reading notebook entry had character and it was in the beginning of the book.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record title, pages and minutes read.

2. Work on planning sheet. Just a reminder that all your entries should have several stickies with a story element on it and B, M, or E for beginning, middle and end.

Have a great evening,
Mrs. Downs

Hi there,
TGIF and the Friday of vacation...
Today in class you were to finish RNB #9. During this time, I went around and corrected your #6-8 on your self-assessment sheet. If you finished with RNB #9 you were to go back over all your RNB entries, 1-9 and be sure to include all things on the self-assessment, the Ladder of Abstraction, and making sure you have talked about the beginning, middle and end of the book on all entries.

Copy and paste link to see self-assessment:
https://docs.google.com/a/portlandschools.org/document/d/1JFDEBNf4pbT06pdTuwk8g50NEb-C9mmOHvrbi4S-KM8/edit?usp=sharing

Also, be sure to check my Google Classroom as it has examples of most of the RNB entries.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record title, pages, and minutes at least five times during vacation.

2. Scavenger Hunt paper should be completed by the Monday after vacation.

Have a great week,
Mrs. Downs

Classwork and Homework

Hi there,
Two snow days has really throne us off... Wednesday in class we took a Reading Plus survey on Google Classroom. Then we looked RNB #6-8 and completed a self-assessment on two of the three. Copy the link and paste it into browser for self-assessment:
https://docs.google.com/a/portlandschools.org/document/d/1JFDEBNf4pbT06pdTuwk8g50NEb-C9mmOHvrbi4S-KM8/edit?usp=sharing

Then we talked about how each of the RNB entries should have information about the beginning, middle and end of the book, it should have the Ladder of Abstraction, and all the components of the self-assessment.
On my google classroom are all the charts and the suggestions for Companion Book ideas to use as RNB strategies. Copy and paste link into browser to see ideas:
https://docs.google.com/a/portlandschools.org/document/d/1hSqDDRUFWiC9YEj9D2-4Zi6QCRMzoZHDzT5WYBncQaE/edit?usp=sharing

Today in class we started RNB strategy nine. You were to choose which one of the story elements you felt you needed more information on: characters, plot, setting, conflict and theme. Then choose a strategy to show that.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record title, pages and minutes. Be sure to continue filling in Scavenger Hunt chart.

2. ELA #1, 3, and 4 finish RNB #9.

Have a great evening,
Mrs. Downs

Classwork and Homework

Hi all,
-Today in class we started a new reading notebook entry. It is #8 and is a Relationship Map.

-You are to analyze the relationships that the protagonist has with other characters in the book and how they relate to the protagonist.  I used the example of Waverly and her relationship with her mom and wrote about it and then wrote about her mom's relationship with Waverly.
You should show this either using a web, t-chart or whatever creative way you can show the relationships. You must have separate information about each character and their relationship to the other.

-You also need to check the requirements from you last self-assessment to be sure you are including all required parts.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record title, minutes and page numbers.

2. Fill in your Scavenger Hunt chart. Be sure to include quotes and page numbers.

3. Finish reading notebook entry #8 which is the relationship map.

Have a great weekend and let's hope for NO SNOW on Sunday night...

Classwork and Homework

Hi all,
-Today in class we did a long-write. You wrote for 25-30 minutes about at least one story element, character, setting, plot, theme or conflict. Most of you quickly realized that when you started to write about one story element, you began talking about another one also.

-You needed to think about the Ladder of Abstraction, the specific details and the theme/big ideas, as you were writing. You also needed to include your voice as you were writing. We talked about using academic language and explaining your ideas.

HOMEWORK:
1. Continue to reread your book for a third time and fill in your scavenger hunt chart. Be sure to record your title, pages and minutes.

2. Finish your long-write that was started in class today.

3. If there isn't any school tomorrow, Thursday, go back through your reading notebook entries 1-7 and add to them using your list of requirements from your last self-assessment sheet that you and I graded.

Enjoy your evening and possibly your snow day... Get your work done early so you can play outside...

Classwork and Homework

Hi there,
Today's class was a day of discovery. You sat with a few students in a group and looked through some companion books to see what you noticed about them. You then had a chart with eight categories on it and you and your group wrote what you noticed about each of the categories. You moved around the room to two to three different groups of books or wikis to discovery the make-up of companion books.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and reread your book using your scavenger hunt chart to writing information on. Be  sure to record your minutes, pages and title.

Have a great evening... We will be in school tomorrow hopefully!!!
