Classwork and Homework

WOW... I cannot believe it is vacation... I do hope you all have an awesome and relaxing vacation. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year...

Today in class you went onto Google Classroom and completed six questions about the argument unit. Then I handed out a half sheet of paper that is at the bottom of the six questions for you to fill out and pass in to me.

Next, I talked about the classroom Spelling Bee that will take place Friday, 1/6. Two winners from each classroom will meet up the following Friday 1/13 to have a Spelling Bee to determine our house winner and runner-up. From there, that student will compete with the rest of the school Spelling Bee winners to represent us in the next step.

I then talk about vacation reading. You MUST read at least 4 times and record your title, minutes, and pages in your assignment notebook. I will be checking for this after vacation.

Lastly, I did a drawing in class. You submitted tickets and I drew two names from each class to pick anything from the prize boxes they wanted. I also drew one name to receive brand new headphones.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record as stated above for at least four nights.

2. Enjoy your vacation and come back refreshed....

See you next year,
Mrs. Downs
Hi there,

Classwork and Homework

Hello,
Today in class you circled two goals or techniques on our argument writing sheets pages 26 & 27 in our notebooks. They could not be the ones that are required on the essay. Such as a claim, counterclaim, evidence etc. Then you copied these goals to the back of the checklist, page 24.

Next, you began work on your essay adding more author's craft and editing.
Use the color coding chart from yesterday's homework blog.

Lastly, I handed out a new reading log to track the books you have completed reading for trimester two. Also, asked students who wanted to study for the classroom spelling bee mostly likely after break.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record title, pages and minutes reading.

2. Work on editing your argument essay. Be sure to add or have at least two author's crafts.

Have a great evening,
Mrs. Downs

Hi there,
Today in class I went over two papers. One was Argument Writers Aim Toward Goals Such As.... and the other one was Argument Writers Use Techniques Such As.... These paper I was unable to put on her digitally. So, please see me for a copy.
I showed you a TED talk where we saw these goals and techniques in action. We talked about which ones we saw.
Then you went back to your desk and looked for these goals and techniques in your own writing.
This is the coding chart I want you to use for your text when you find the following:
-Claim= Red
-Counterclaim=Blue
-Techniques or goals=Purple
-Anything you edit today or add today=Green
-Then you are to underline your three reasons that support your claim
You are to use these codes EVERY time you see the technique or goal in your paper.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record your minutes, pages, and title.

2. Work on editing author's craft by using the coding chart above.

Classwork and Homework

Good afternoon,
Today in class we went over that you should all have a counter-claim in your argument papers. We talked about how it should NOT be just in the introduction, but weaved throughout your paper. It should be clear to identify.

I handed out a small sheet of paper with SOME, NOT ALL, examples of phrase you could use to acknowledge your counter-claim. Remember these are only some, you may use other phrases. Copy this link into your browser to view the paper I handed out:
https://docs.google.com/a/portlandschools.org/document/d/1scFauGiFCwrT2pjgULAs6_yFQDtSpCvcwcv5Q3xW7bI/edit?usp=sharing

Then you went back to your coalition groups and on the back of your argument checklist you wrote down some audiences that you all believed should hear your argument. You wrote down specific groups or people. Such as: Mrs. Santiago, Mayor Strimling, etc.

Lastly, you created on the back of your argument checklist a goal for incorporating your counter-claim into your paper your paper not only in the introduction, but throughout your paper.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record your title, minutes and page numbers.

2. Work on putting your counter-claim in your argument paper. BE SURE TO HIGHLIGHT IT IN BLUE each time you mention the counter-claim throughout your paper.
Remember you must UNSUBMIT to work on the paper. Then be sure to submit it when done tonight.

Have a great evening,
Mrs. Downs
