Classwork and Homework

Hi students,
I started off class today looking at your nightly reading record for last week. Many of you had recorded your pages, minutes and title. Then in class you reacquainted yourselves with your claim and notes for your argument paper. You then then turned and talked to a partner about which side of the argument you are on. Next, you talked about the next steps. Did you need more reasons, research, a better claim?
Back to your desk you went and then you began filling in the boxes and bullets paper. Here is the link to get the paper: Copy it into your browser to view it.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eG4OV5af-g0plB7vtLGWs8iPDxML9PucU3_yRRGz0ew/edit?usp=sharing

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record your pages, title and minutes.

2. Continue work on gathering research/information for your argument paper.

3. Finish your boxes and bullets paper.

Classwork and Homework

Good afternoon all my wonderful Allagash students,
Today in class we went over what makes a claim strong and clear. We watched this youtube video and discussed it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-tOeh8n8yQ   Copy this into your browser and watch it. Then we went over some claims to determine if they were powerful or not. Next, we look at some weak claim and the rewritten stronger ones, I have this copy here at school. In your coalition groups you rewrote a weak claim about school uniforms to make it strong, clear and arguable. Then we shared them and for the best one each person in the group received five tickets. Most of you made it hard to judge as you did a great job.
Lastly, you worked on your own claims with your coalition groups for a short period of time.
I hope to have you do more with them tomorrow.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record # of pages. You must read at least FOUR nights between now and next Monday.

2. Continue to take notes that will support your claim and your three reasons.

Have a great evening,
Mrs. Downs

Classwork and Homework

Hi there,
Today in class we started out looking at claim statements. We assessed them as to whether they were strong claims or weak claims. Copy the link in your browser to view:
 https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cXW1y0GcV57hXAX1cpE9c1ijW31Yn7R5TElUGyJ6_3s/edit?usp=sharing
Then we shared facts with a partner from your notes. The partner was to ask clarifying questions or fortifying questions to you, then you reversed roles. These questions are in your notebook.
Lastly you wrote your claim for your argument and shared it with your coalition groups. I collected these to see where each of you are at.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read your number of pages and record them.

2. Continue note-taking on your topic.

Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Downs

Hi there,
Today in class we started out getting the sources and article titles from our coalition group members and wrote them on our article tracker. Then you looked at your articles and found 3-5 very important facts in your notes. You numbered them 1-5, with 1 being most important. Next you each shared one fact with each other until the time was up.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read page numbers that your set for a goal and record it.

2. Continue to take notes on your topic tonight. Be sure to go to my previous blog page and copy the website to get to the argument topic resource page.

Classwork and Homework

Hi there,
Today in class I introduced your coalition groups. I instructed you on how to set up your notebook for article tracking and note taking. I mentioned that everyone in each group needs to read different articles. No two should read the same article. The more articles read, the more information your coalition group will have. The blog post for today's classwork gives most of the articles you should be reading under the category you were put into.. A few asked about other articles, but they need to be approved by me first.  The remainder of the class was spent reading the article and note taking. Remember to be questioning the article and write them on stickie notes. You are the consumer and you want to be sure that what they told you in the article is facts.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read and record # of pages.

2. Finish note taking on two articles before class tomorrow so you can share your info. in your coalition groups.

Have a great evening,
Mrs. Downs

Classwork

Hi class,
Here is the link for Argument Topics Resources:  Please copy and paste it into your browser.

https://docs.google.com/a/portlandschools.org/document/d/1nvScFCYbLh6vtZqbog9xOqDO8Z6n0dT6_GseJf0hfE4/edit?usp=sharing

You are to sit with your coalition group and determine which two articles you will read and take notes on. You can use the pro/con sheet or any other note taking strategy that works for you.
Then on your article tracker in your writing notebook write the names of the articles that your members are going to be reading.

Then begin reading your articles and start your note taking. If you do not finish them in class, you MUST come prepared on Wednesday with notes from both of the articles you chose to read.

Persevere with this assignment.

Classwork and Homework

Hi there,
Hope you enjoyed your long weekend.
Today in class you choose your top two choices from the list on the board of argument topics. We talked about how these presentations and papers will be due before Christmas/Holiday break. You will be put into coalition groups tomorrow and will begin your research.
Then you free read for the remainder of the period.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read your number of pages and record them.

2. Remember it is important to be doing your Reading Plus at home throughout the week.

3. Book orders were due today and no one turned them in today. So, there will not be a November book order and there was not an October one either.  So maybe in December. These books make great gifts.

Classwork and Homework

Hi there,
Again today we did lots of work in class. Under the document camera I project a paragraph about competitive sports.  As a class we looked at it, we organized it by doing some or all of the following: boxing in the reason, crossing out evidence that did not work,  rewriting of some of the evidence, adding to it, moving evidence around to help it read more smoothly, explaining the importance of the evidence, getting more evidence, citing sources, put the most compelling evidence at the end.

Then you went back to your seats and worked on your paragraph that you had written last night.  Some of you had problems as you DID NOT do your homework last night.

Finally, you completed your self-assessment about perseverance and turned it in for a HOWLs grade.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read your number of pages and record.

2. Be sure your author planning sheet is completed by tomorrow.  Some of you did not have it done today.

3. Be thinking about a topic you will want to research for your argument paper.

4. Look at Infinite Campus and complete missing work.

5. Parents need to sign up for conferences. Students have the information and if not, call the school's office.

Have a great evening,
Mrs. Downs

Classwork and Homework

I love the sun!!!
Today in class we did LOTS of work. I first went over a checklist on how to bolster your evidence. We talked about and looked at our essays to see: including direct quotes and crediting the source, leading in or out of evidence with phrases that credit your sources, including background information about the evidence so that it makes sense to the reader and explaining why the evidence is important by answering the "so what."
Also we talked about techniques to be using: adding quotes, leading into a quote, pg. #'s, cutting quotes down to use only important part, tucking in background info. so the reader has context, citing or paraphrasing sources, and explaining why evidence matters.
I handed out a paper that talked about Ranking and Choosing important evidence, and also one that talked about Make "Quotes" Work. You were then sent back to your seats to work on body paragraph 1,2, or 3. You could add these paragraphs or start a new one on a blank page 6. I want to see revision or a new body paragraph.

HOMEWORK:
1. Read # of pages and record.

2. Work on essay to revise.

3. Finish Author's planning sheet.

4. PARENTS NEED TO SIGN UP FOR CONFERENCES.

Have a great evening,
Mrs. Downs
